t all started as a policy paper on charter schools. After serving as a researcher for The Heritage Foundation, CSUSA’s Founder, President and CEO Jon Hage, became Director of Research at the Foundation for Florida’s Future, a public policy organization founded by former Florida Governor Jeb Bush. He wrote his now-famous comprehensive paper on charter schools and collected vast knowledge on what was happening with the first charter schools around the country. This gave him a front-row seat at the table to help draft Florida legislation to authorize charter schools. Soon after the charter law was passed, he helped create the first charter school in Florida. Jon then started a non-profit foundation to help advise charter schools on how to get applications approved. Just a year later, in 1997, he started Charter Schools USA (CSUSA).As a family-owned and operated start-up, CSUSA’s primary focus has always been Putting Students First in every decision. Jon developed a business model that did just that. Early on, Sherry Hage, a life-long educator, joined the team and helped develop a curriculum that is student-focused, parent-involved, academically accountable, and values-driven. CSUSA grew from those first few students in one small store-front school to one of the largest high-performing education management companies with nearly 100 schools serving some 81,000 students in the United States. Currently, there are thousands of students on waitlists to attend CSUSA schools and that list continues to grow. A few years ago, Sherry opened her own not-for-profit focused on tackling educational challenges in new and creative ways to set up students for success, including providing professional development, grants management, and curriculum support.
Realizing early on that parents and students need choices in their education, Jon and Sherry’s deep-seated belief that every child is born with God-given potential and that every student can learn is the basis for CSUSA’s success. The challenge our society faces is that education is not a one-size-fits-all model. This fact feeds into the innovative fiber of CSUSA to provide unexpected solutions for parents and students. To better serve unique student and family needs, CSUSA embarked on a series of innovative firsts including the first Charter School in the Workplace, the first Municipal Charter, and the first K-12 charter network, and as a result of its proven results, CSUSA became the first charter school management organization to achieve corporation system-wide accreditation.
Although CSUSA is large, it remains laser-focused on managing high-performing schools serving a diverse student body. It collaborates with municipalities, governing boards, and education-based partners to provide every aspect of student-focused service from building and developing state-of-the-art school facilities, with its sister company Red Apple Development, to creating results-driven curriculum, character education, back-office services, blended online learning and early education options through the Hage’s LaunchED educational solutions companies.
