Lake Norman Charter was first envisioned in 1996 by a group of parents who were passionate about providing a strong educational option in north Mecklenburg County. This group spearheaded a movement to create a school that focused on strong academics, service and leadership, and their charter application was approved by the state in March 1998.  Lake Norman Charter opened in August 1998 with students in 5th to 7th grades, and the next year added 8th grade. LNC opened its permanent middle school building in August 2007.

That year the school also expanded to include high school, adding 9th grade at its former middle school location. In August 2009, phase one of the high school building was finished and ready to welcome students. In August 2010, phase two opened and finally, in August 2013, the high school building was completed. In June 2011, LNC graduated its inaugural class. Since then, LNC’s graduates have demonstrated the exceptional level of their education by being selected to attend some of the best universities in the nation. In addition, the class of 2019 earned over $10 million dollars in scholarships.

In early 2015, Lake Norman Charter recognized it was time to offer its unique brand of education to the youngest set of students and was approved by the State Board of Education to expand to add elementary grades.  In June 2016, the school purchased 37 acres for the elementary school site, located 3½ miles from the current middle school/high school site. In August 2017 LNC Elementary opened grades K-2, and in August 2018 became a K-12 school by adding grades 3 and 4.

In the 2018-2019 school year, Lake Norman Charter celebrated 20 years of excellence.

In fall 2019, the new LNC Elementary School building opened for students in grades K-4 and we added an additional class to all elementary school grades for the 2020-2021 school year.
