Job Description:

PURPOSE: This employee designs and implements instruction for students in special education programs.  The incumbent is responsible for planning, delivering, and evaluating individual educational programs and all components thereof.  These are based on students’ individual needs and the goals and objectives of the Henrico County School Board and administration.  Communication with parents, students, outside agencies and other professionals is an essential component to this position.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES: 
  • Plans and provides daily instructional and behavioral programs for students 
  • Collects and analyzes data to discern students’ academic and behavioral strengths and weaknesses
  • Develops IEPs that meets each student’s educational and behavioral needs
  • Implements IEPs effectively to utilize strengths and provide support for areas of weakness
  • Assesses student progress and reports progress to parents
  • Requisitions materials and equipment and performs other clerical tasks required
  • Conducts effective FBAs (Functional Behavioral Assessments) and develops useful BIPs (Behavioral Intervention Plans)
  • Implements crisis intervention and interactive problem solving for students when behaviors escalate
  • Functions as a member of a professional team
  • Utilizes the services of an instructional assistant
  • Performs other duties as assigned

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: 
Extensive knowledge in current trends in exceptional education and in educational methodology is essential.  Must have considerable knowledge of learning theory and applications.  Ability to plan, organize, and deliver instruction which meets individual and group needs and ability to manage a classroom are essential.  Excellent written and oral communication skills are needed. The teacher must adequately prepare students academically while meeting their behavioral needs.  This must be accomplishes in a manner that provides a safe, secure learning environment.

Job Requirements:

Must hold or be eligible for a Virginia teaching license with an endorsement in a special education concentration.   A master's degree and prior successful teaching experience in special education is preferred. 

Minimum salary for this 209 day position:
  • Bachelor's degree - $48,032
  • Master's degree - $50,338
