CLASSROOM TEACHER CLASSIFICATION: Certificated SALARY LEVEL: Certificated Salary Schedule WORK YEAR: 184.50 Days DEFINITION Identifies students' needs in relation to the curriculum objectives; applies a program of instruction consistent with students' learning needs, curriculum objectives, and instructional materials; uses appropriate teaching strategies; assesses student progress; creates and manages a classroom environment conducive to student learning; and communicates with parents regularly regarding the students' academic and social progress. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES Essential Duties  Identifies students' entering knowledge and skills with pre-testing, and reviewing prior achievement records.  Identifies specific student learning outcomes to be attained in relation to student learning needs and curriculum objectives.  Determines a sequence of learning experiences utilizing District adopted instructional materials and selected supplementary materials.  Develops and utilizes written lesson plans following the District’s guidelines, which may include long-term weekly and daily lesson plans, as the basis of instruction.  Applies appropriate teaching strategies consistent with the students' needs, and adheres to the District and Site initiatives and adopted curriculum.  Follows the state guidelines for number of instructional minutes for each curricular area.  Develops and communicates regularly, expectations regarding student behavior and related consequences.  Uses instructional time effectively; maintains an appropriate physical environment and appropriate individual, class and program records.  Communicates (e.g. parent-teacher conferences, telephone calls, written documents, etc.) students' academic and social progress to parents on a regular on-going basis.  Listens to parent requests for information/assistance and responds through conferences, telephone conversations, and written communications.  Encourages parents to provide at-home educational support.  Attends & participates in meetings required by federally mandated programs, including those outside of the school day.  Follows the IEP, SST or 504 plans, provides the appropriate support and works with the case carriers, counselors and coordinators to develop the best program for identified students.
 Improves teaching effectiveness by responding to supervisor's performance evaluation recommendations and participating in required school and district sponsored in-service activities.  Maintains standards of professionalism and abides by the tenets of the "Code of Ethics of the Teaching Profession" of the State of California and the California Standards for the Teaching Profession. Other Duties  Performs other related duties as assigned pursuant to the Master Contract. Pursuant to the terms of the Bargaining Agreement. PHYSICAL AND MENTAL CHARACTERISTICS Physical, mental, and emotional stamina to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position; manual dexterity sufficient to write, use the telephone and business machines; vision sufficient to read printed materials; hearing sufficient to communicate in person and hold telephone conversations; speaking ability in an understandable voice with sufficient volume to be heard in normal conversational distances on the telephone and addressing groups; physical agility to push/pull, squat, twist, turn, bend, stoop, and to reach overhead; physical mobility sufficient to move about the work environment (office, district, school site to site), drive an automobile, and to respond to emergency situations; physical strength sufficient to lift 25 pounds alone or more with a two person lift; physical stamina sufficient to sit, stand or walk for prolonged periods of time; mental acuity to collect and interpret data, evaluate, reason, define problems, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, make valid judgments and decisions. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience:  An appropriate California Teaching Credential.  Graduation from an accredited college or university. Knowledge of:  Curriculum that is to be taught.  Effective classroom management techniques. Ability to:  Stimulate, engage and motivate students to learn.  Interact with and maintain a cooperative relationship with students, staff and parents.  Communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.  Meet schedules and timelines.  Work independently with appropriate direction.  Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.  Use technology and computer software applications appropriate to the work environment and effectively integrate computer use with and by students in the classroom, as appropriate. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS  Previous experience working with linguistically and culturally diverse groups.  Ability to speak a language in addition to English.  Successful experience in the area of conflict resolution.  Successful experience as a classroom teacher.
