Job Description:

5th Grade Science/Social Studies Position

Structure:  

We are excited to hire for the expansion of our 4th and 5th grades for the 2022 school year. Our goal is to create the greatest sense of personalization and sense of belonging for our younger students by limiting each class to 20 students.  Each grade will be capped at 60 students which will be divided into 3 cohorts of 20 students. To do this we are restructuring our current high quality staff and hiring teachers who are passionate about either ELA, Social Studies/Science or math for each grade level. 

5th Grade Science/Social Studies Teacher role and responsibility

Responsible for leading and managing the needs of your grade level team:

 
  • Serve as a key member of the leadership team with each teacher leader and school administration to make sure the school’s Work Plan is being accomplished and the Emergency Response team’s monthly drills are accomplished.

  • Ensure vertical alignment with the Humanities and Science teachers in the Upper School

  • Resolve low level discipline issues in your grade level. 

  • Document student’s inappropriate behaviors. 

  • Manage necessary behavior plans with the school counselors.

  • Consult with the grade level team to set classroom norms. 

  • Coordinate all required State assessments and iReady diagnostic assessments for your grade level team and lead data dives to improve growth and achievement.

  • Communicate with parents and administration regarding significant discipline issues.

  • Manage shadow day experiences for potential students during enrollment season in your grade level.

  • Provide coverage for your grade level teachers during absences 

  • Implement standards based curriculum maps, instruction, and assessment.

  • Coordinate planning time.

  • Plan field work experiences.

  • Plan and organize high quality Exhibitions 

  • Assist teachers with creating project deadlines and project launches.

  • Tune Long-Term and daily learning targets.

  • Ensure weekly/updated grades are posted

 

General Responsibilities:

 
  • Maintain and enrich their expertise in the subject area(s) they teach;

  • Develop rigorous projects and lesson plans that ensure the attainment of state learning standards and the additional specific grade-by-grade learning standards set forth in the charter;

  • Coordinate projects and lesson plans with other teachers to maximize possibilities for teaching similar topics in the same general time frame, thus reinforcing student knowledge on an interdisciplinary basis;

  • Provide direct and indirect instruction;

  • Develop robust rubrics designed to guide student learning;

  • Long and short-term planning addressing individual needs of students;

  • Prepare students adequately for all required assessments both within the classroom and in large scale assessment such as iReady and CMAS;

  • Evaluate students’ progress on an ongoing basis;

  • Prepare and post assessments for individual student achievement weekly in order to provide parents real time access to online data;

  • Provide an inviting, exciting, innovative, learning environment;

  • Engage in effective and appropriate classroom management;

  • Accept and incorporate feedback and coaching from administrative staff;

  • Serve as an advisor to a students, including organizing advisory groups, overseeing the academic and behavioral progress;

  • Perform other duties, as deemed appropriate, by the Head of School.
     

Qualifications:

  • Highly qualified or licensed;

  • Demonstrated expertise in the subject they will teach, as evidenced by personal skills and knowledge, an undergraduate major or minor or graduate degree in the subject they will teach, or direct subject-area teaching experience;

  • Demonstrated communication skills;

  • Demonstrated ability and experience to engage the interest of 4th and 5th grade-age children;

  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse children, including those with special needs;

  • Teaching experience in a public or private school;

  • Demonstrated ability to work well with parents;

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a team member;

  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate tests and measurements of achievement.

Below is our new 12,000 sq. ft. 4th/5th grade building with a rooftop classroom, digital media makerspace and art studio.
